INTERACTIVE EIGHT-OPTION SYMPTOM FINDER
What exactly is your thermostat doing?
A thermostat measures temperature and requests heating; it does not usually make heat itself. Pick the symptom you can observe before assuming the thermostat is defective. Avoid removing wall plates or touching wiring while diagnosing.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Why your thermostat might not work
A thermostat can appear broken for several quite different reasons: loss of power, incorrect heating mode, an inactive schedule, an inaccurate temperature reading, lost wireless communication, an open control circuit, or a heating appliance that cannot respond. In a UK boiler system the signal may pass through a receiver or motorised valve; in a US forced-air installation it may involve a furnace or air-handler control board.
First ask two questions: is the thermostat powered and responding? And is it requesting heat? If the answer to both is yes, investigate what happens farther along the heating sequence rather than immediately replacing the thermostat.
FIRST FIVE MINUTES
Six checks before buying a new thermostat
- Identify the system: battery wall thermostat, mains-powered wired control, wireless thermostat and receiver, smart thermostat, or US HVAC unit. Read its model label/manual without opening electrical covers.
- Check mode: Heat (or an appropriate Auto mode) rather than Off, Cool, Frost/holiday protection or an unintended Away setting.
- Check setpoint against actual room temperature: set the target a few degrees above the displayed room reading for a test. Watch for a flame, heat, radiator or “Heat On” icon. Some controls wait briefly before switching.
- Check timing: scheduled off periods, temporary holds, daylight-saving changes and a clock that reset after a power interruption may override what you expect.
- Check available power: replace user-serviceable batteries only where your model uses them; observe any normal boiler/HVAC switch, supply status or breaker indicator. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips again.
- Look for equipment response: a UK wireless receiver may indicate heating demand; a US furnace may be waiting through a short safety delay. A call signal does not prove the appliance is healthy.
Use the manufacturer's documented procedure for your exact model. Do not bridge thermostat terminals, detach a fixed faceplate that exposes wires, bypass interlocks or open a boiler casing.
MECHANISM FIRST
The four places a heating request can fail
A thermostat is a control, not a miniature heater. It must read the room correctly, decide heating is required, communicate the call, then have that call acted on by the heating equipment. Finding which stage fails helps distinguish a control fault from a wider heating fault.
UK wet central heating: the thermostat may request heat through a receiver, time controller or zone valve. Then the boiler and pump must circulate sufficiently hot water. US forced air: a thermostat can call for heat while a furnace waits on a door safety switch, limit control or other fault. Heat pumps: defrost cycles and equipment-protection delays can temporarily affect response. A smart app being offline is not always identical to the local heating control being inoperative.
FAULT 1 · POWER
Thermostat screen blank or completely dead
A blank screen may indicate depleted batteries, disrupted mains or HVAC control power, or an intentional display-sleep setting. Some thermostats use AA/AAA cells; others run from fixed wiring, a receiver or a 24-volt HVAC supply, and certain models use batteries for backup only. Do not assume every blank screen means a flat battery.
- Wake a normally sleeping screen using the manufacturer-designated button or dial.
- If the user manual specifies replaceable batteries, insert the correct type and orientation; avoid touching any wiring.
- Check whether other heating controls or the boiler/furnace also have power. A shared outage suggests a supply or appliance issue.
- If a breaker has tripped, follow normal household electrical safety guidance. If it trips again, leave it off and call a professional.
- For some US HVAC setups an open furnace-door interlock or failed condensate safety can interrupt thermostat power; inspection and repair may require a technician.
A blank thermostat with no user-replaceable batteries should not be opened as a casual DIY check: UK controls can contain mains voltage, and even low-voltage wiring can damage equipment when shorted.
FAULT 2 · NO HEAT REQUEST
Screen works, but heating never switches on
Compare the displayed current room temperature with the set temperature. If the room already reads warmer than the target, the thermostat should often remain idle. Heat mode, programme windows, vacation or eco settings, frost protection and a temporary schedule hold can all make a healthy thermostat look unresponsive.
Set a sensible higher target, verify the correct mode and watch the display for a heating-demand symbol. Do not judge the result only by listening for an immediate click; some smart controllers and heat pumps use delays, and some systems modulate quietly.
If the buttons or dial do not respond, check an enabled key lock, child lock, dead batteries, screen-sleep behaviour or a software freeze following the maker's user guide. A manufacturer-approved restart may help, but factory reset should not be the first step: it can erase pairing, schedules, heating-system configuration and installer settings.
FAULT 3 · SIGNAL OR CONNECTION
Wireless thermostat offline or saying “No RF”
A wireless heating control can have three distinct connections: thermostat-to-receiver radio, hub-to-router communication, and app-to-cloud connectivity. A loss of one does not necessarily stop local heating. This distinction is particularly useful with UK Hive and similar systems.
- Read the receiver's indicator lights using your exact model guide. A powered receiver that has lost its thermostat link points to a different issue than a receiver with no supply.
- Check the thermostat's battery indication, distance and recent relocation, thick walls or new radio-interfering equipment.
- Where supported, use the maker's normal reconnect/pairing flow; keep it separate from an installer-level reset.
- If only the phone app is offline but room control still works, investigate hub/router connectivity rather than assuming the boiler is defective.
- Never remove receiver covers or change boiler wiring to test the signal.
Hive's official no-signal guidance explains its thermostat, receiver and hub separately.
FAULT 4 · HEAT REQUEST WITHOUT HEAT
“Heat On” appears, but the house stays cold
This is a vital diagnostic fork. A heat-request icon generally means the controller believes heating should run; it is not proof the boiler, heat pump, furnace, valve or pump has responded. Check the appliance's public display and normal external controls, without opening its casing.
For a UK boiler, look for obvious lockout/error indications, heating-mode status, timer overrides and sealed-system pressure in the manufacturer’s normal operating range. If the boiler runs but a radiator does not, check the appropriate radiator-no-heat guide. If the entire house has no heating despite a demand, see why the heating is not turning on.
For US forced-air systems, a closed supply register and dirty return filter can limit warmth even when heat is being made, but a furnace that fails to ignite or repeatedly locks out needs an HVAC professional. If a newly installed thermostat has never controlled the heat correctly, incorrect wiring or equipment configuration is possible: stop adjusting the wiring yourself and have the installer check compatibility.
SENSOR AND PLACEMENT
Thermostat reading seems wrong
Most thermostats switch according to the temperature they believe they are measuring. Direct sunlight, drafts, an exterior wall, a nearby radiator, an appliance or a hallway with different conditions can distort that measurement. A warm location may cause heating to stop while distant rooms remain cold.
Compare with a trustworthy room thermometer placed near the thermostat after both have stabilised; small differences can be normal, and models vary in calibration options. Avoid arbitrary recalibration if the main problem is location. Check the user guide for an offset setting rather than assuming the sensor has failed. If one room is unusually cold but most rooms are comfortable, the issue may involve zoning, radiator distribution or airflow rather than the thermostat alone.
HEATING STAYS ON
Why does heating continue after the target temperature?
Some systems continue briefly after a heat call ends: pumps can overrun, furnaces can blow residual warm air and thermostats use a small temperature band to avoid rapid short cycling. An indicated “off” state with a cooling pump is different from a boiler actually continuing to fire indefinitely.
If rooms keep getting hotter and the appliance remains actively heating far beyond the setpoint, check normal override and hold settings first. Then report a possibly stuck relay, receiver, zone valve or control fault. In a UK system, a thermostat showing no demand while the radiators continue heating can implicate downstream control; our heating-stays-on guide covers that distinct symptom.
VISUAL COMPARISON
Four observations that narrow down the cause
| Observation | More useful next check | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Display dark, buttons inert | Model-specific battery/power status | Thermostat needs replacing |
| Display on, no heat icon | Mode, programme, target vs room temp | Boiler is broken |
| Heat icon on, boiler/furnace idle | Receiver and appliance status | Call signal arrived |
| Heat produced, rooms cold | Circulation, zone, radiators or airflow | Thermostat failed |
UK AND US DIFFERENCES
Boiler, heat pump or furnace? The same symptom means different things
UK boiler with radiators: a programmer may permit heating at certain times, while the thermostat, wireless receiver and motorised valve determine demand. You might have hot tap water but no space heating. A thermostat cannot override a boiler fault, a closed zone valve or a pump issue.
US furnace or air handler: check Heat mode, equipment power, and any normal protection delay. A furnace may have independent safety interlocks, so a working thermostat does not ensure ignition or airflow. Resideo documentation warns that incorrect new-installation wiring or system configuration can cause heating failure.
Heat pump: heating may pause temporarily for defrost or protection; the outdoor unit, fan, auxiliary heat and model-specific display can help technicians narrow the problem. Do not change installer settings as a shortcut. Line-voltage electric baseboard thermostats: these may carry mains voltage, not the low-voltage signals of a typical US furnace thermostat; do not remove the thermostat cover or work on its wiring.
WHEN TO STOP
When to call an electrician or heating professional
Contact a qualified professional if the thermostat remains blank despite permitted checks; a receiver has no power; heating runs without a request; the appliance locks out; a zone valve or control needs electrical testing; or the problem began after thermostat replacement. In the UK gas-boiler work must be completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. In the US use an appropriately licensed HVAC or electrical technician.
Tell them the thermostat model, whether the screen powers on, actual and target room temperatures, whether a heat icon appears, receiver-light status, boiler/furnace error codes, the timing of the issue, and whether a recent power cut or installation preceded it. Those facts are more useful than saying simply that the thermostat is broken.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Thermostat not working: 12 common questions
Why is my thermostat screen blank?
It may have depleted user-replaceable batteries, no supply from the boiler/HVAC system, a tripped breaker or an intentional screen-sleep mode. Check the exact model guide before opening anything.
Can a thermostat have a normal screen but still be faulty?
Yes. Its sensor, buttons, relay or communications may malfunction. But settings, a receiver or a boiler/furnace fault can produce the same symptom, so a live screen alone is not a diagnosis.
Why won't the heat come on when I turn up the thermostat?
Verify Heat mode, schedule and target temperature first. If a heat-request symbol appears but the appliance remains idle, investigate the receiver and heating equipment rather than assuming the thermostat is defective.
Do I need to wait after changing thermostat settings?
Many thermostats and heating systems use protective or control delays. Some US manuals describe approximately five minutes for equipment protection. Follow your model's normal timing; do not keep rapidly switching it.
Will replacing thermostat batteries make my boiler work?
Only if that thermostat actually uses user-replaceable batteries and low battery power caused its failure. Some controls are mains or equipment powered. Replacing batteries will not fix a faulty boiler or zone valve.
Why does my Hive thermostat say “No RF”?
It generally signals lost radio communication between the thermostat and receiver. That differs from a cloud-app outage; check Hive's specific receiver-light guide and follow its documented reconnection procedure.
Can Wi-Fi going down stop central heating?
It depends on the smart system and configuration. Many maintain local heating control without internet, but remote schedules or app features may fail. Confirm using your manufacturer's support information.
Should I factory-reset a thermostat that is not responding?
Usually not as the first step. A factory reset may remove schedules, pairings and installer settings. Try only the permitted low-impact checks first, then follow the model's guidance.
How can I tell whether the thermostat or boiler is at fault?
Determine whether the thermostat is powered, requests heat and sends a signal to its receiver where observable. If the system acknowledges a call but cannot heat, a professional should investigate the appliance or downstream controls.
Why does my heating continue after the thermostat turns off?
Pump overrun and residual furnace airflow can be normal briefly. Continued active heating with no request can point to overrides or a stuck downstream control and needs proper diagnosis.
Can sunlight make a thermostat turn off too early?
Yes. Sunlight or nearby heat sources can make its sensor report a warmer temperature than occupied areas, stopping a normal system before distant rooms feel comfortable.
Is thermostat wiring safe to repair myself?
Not as a general troubleshooting step. UK heating controls and electric baseboard thermostats may use mains voltage, while shorting nominally low-voltage HVAC wiring can damage components. Use qualified help.
