Why does my RCD keep tripping?
A residual current device trips when the monitored outgoing and returning currents are sufficiently unbalanced. Common causes include faulty appliances, moisture, damaged fixed wiring, neutral-to-earth faults, and cumulative leakage from equipment.
Safe observations
Note which protective device operated, the rooms affected and what was happening at the time. Never remove the consumer-unit cover, bypass an RCD or repeatedly reset an unexplained trip. A registered electrician can investigate persistent faults using appropriate test instruments.
